Haripad's great Murugan temple is so loved that people call it Dakshina Palani – the Palani of the south – or simply Kerala Palani. It is counted among the largest Subramanya temples in the state, and its tall golden flagmast is often said to be the biggest in any Kerala temple.
The Lord stands facing east as a tall, four-armed Subramanya, holding the vel (spear) and the vajrayudha, one hand raised in blessing. Devotees feel the presence of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva together in him. Around the shrine are four gopurams, a large koothambalam and the wide Perumkulam pond, and peacocks – Murugan's own vehicle – wander the temple grounds.
The story goes that the idol was once worshipped by Parasurama and was later lost in the waters. Long afterwards, the leading families of the area – then known as Ekachakra – are said to have seen it in a dream. Following the signs, they found the idol in the backwaters near Govindamuttom (some versions say in Kayamkulam lake), carried it home by boat with an escort of other boats and brought it ashore at Nelpurakadavu.
On the way, the idol is said to have rested for a short while under a banyan tree; a small shrine called Ara Nazhika Ambalam marks that spot today. The boat journey is still remembered every year in the Payippad Jalotsavam, the boat festival held on the Payippad river after Thiruvonam. Devotees also believe that Vishnu appeared at the consecration, which is how the town came to be called Harigeethapuram – today's Haripad.
Devotees hold the temple to be extremely ancient, but there are no reliable records of when it was founded. In later history it belonged to the Odanad (Kayamkulam) kingdom and passed to Travancore in the 18th century. A fire around 1921 destroyed much of the complex, though the golden flagmast and the koothambalam survived; the temple was rebuilt under the Travancore kings. Today it is administered by the Travancore Devaswom Board.
